MAKING the headlines but for all the wrong reasons.
In a recent interview with the Independent Irish, the mother of a child sexual abuse victim spoke of the horrors inflicted on her daughter by Dublin-based Malaysian child psychiatrist Amirul Arif Mohd Yunos.
Detailing the grooming and sexual abuse that began when the daughter was just 14, the mother related that her family had initially reached out to Amirul to treat her for mild anxiety brought about by COVID 19.
Unbeknownst to the family, the 38-year-old Amirul who is attached to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) office in Clonskeagh, Dublin had arranged to meet the girl in secret under the guise of continuing “treatment”.
That was where the unimaginable and indescribable horrors began (read the detailed interview here).
When the victim tried to take her own life was when her family found out about the horrors and sought justice.
What disgusted the victim’s mother is that Amirul tried to buy the girl’s silence with an offer of £2,000 (RM11,280).
Her contempt was extended to Amirul’s deemed reputable immediate family – wife, siblings and mother – who gave testimony on the accused’s “good character”, underlining their tolerance for such despicable acts.
Amirul pleaded guilty to the charges of sexual abuse and grooming and has already served 14 months of an eight-and-a-half-year sentence. He is eligible to be released in five years and will be deported home to Malaysia.
This prompted a mother of two Aysha Ridzuan (@ayshardzn) to wonder on the X platform how the Malaysian authorities intend to deal with him.
Many netizens were aghast not least by his immediate family who are seen to enabling this “monster”.
Some opined that this criminal had brought shame to his country and should be treated accordingly.
However, more than a few expressed concerns that this convicted rapist would be welcomed back and be given a nice cushy GLC (government linked company) job or as pointed out, secretly ‘planted’ in institutions of higher learning.
There were more than a few snide and sarcastic comments given the country’s previous record in handling such matters.
One netizen – tagging @PDRM (Royal Malaysia Police) – made the pertinent proposal for a sexual offenders list to allow for closer supervision of such predators.
Some hoped that Amirul got a taste of his own medicine while serving his prison sentence.
It is without a doubt that Amirul is among the worst kinds of criminal – a child rapist. His actions have permanently scarred a young girl forever.
He is a convicted criminal and should be treated as such – not assimilated back into society with comfortable jobs in GLCs or academia.
Are we to let him back into Malaysian society upon his deportation? This was a netizen’s sarcastic reply.
