PETALING JAYA: The public caning of a man convicted by the shariah court for khalwat was carried out in Kuala Terengganu after Friday prayers today.
Affendi Awang, 42, was caned at 2.50pm in front of 90 witnesses at the Al-Muktafi Billah Shah Mosque, Astro Awani reported.
The caning was carried out by a Marang prison caning officer in just two minutes.
Affendi was examined by a medical officer before the caning. After the punishment, he was briefly returned to the room before being transported back to Marang prison.
The father of five is the first person in Terengganu to be caned publicly.
The punishment had drawn criticism from various groups, including the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), which accused the Terengganu shariah court of overstepping its jurisdiction.
G25, a group of prominent retired civil servants, also warned that public caning contravenes both federal and shariah laws. - FMT
