Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman questioned the RCI report on Batu Puteh, saying it made former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad appear pro-Singapore.

KUALA LUMPUR
It is inconceivable that the “ultranationalist” and “ultra Malay” Dr Mahathir Mohamad would have decided to cede Batu Puteh to Singapore, says Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar).

He questioned the royal commission of inquiry’s report on Batu Puteh, particularly that Mahathir unilaterally decided to drop two legal applications on the matter, saying it made the former prime minister appear pro-Singapore.

The former Muda president said it was like an alternate universe where everything was in reverse.

“I would have never expected that there would be a day when some would say that Mahathir, who is known as an ultranationalist and ultra Malay, would place Singapore’s interests ahead of Malaysia’s,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.

Syed Saddiq questioned the logic of Mahathir giving in to Singapore when he had fought hard against the city-state in other matters, such as for a review of the rates for raw water supplied to Singapore.

The RCI report said Mahathir had written to the solicitor-general on May 21, 2018 stating that the applications to review and interpret the International Court of Justice’s  2008 decision on Batu Puteh “need not be continued”.

The solicitor-general then informed Singapore that Malaysia would be dropping both legal applications. Singapore was formally informed of this at 9am on May 23, 2018.

On the other hand, the Cabinet only met at 9.30am the same day and discussed the issue later in the meeting under “other matters”, according to the RCI.

Mahathir denied unilaterally deciding not to proceed with the applications. Today, he claimed that the RCI report contained a lot of information that was wrong. - FMT
