The company that supplied the controversial ham and cheese sandwiches to KK Mart outlets in Universiti Malaya has been charged with misusing the halal logo, according to a report.
Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd and its managing director Ewe Sarn Yeun have been separately charged in the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court, Berita Harian reported.
Ewe was charged under Section 4(1) of the Trade Descriptions Order (Halal Definition) 2011 with supplying 366 sandwiches that could mislead people into believing they were halal.
The Gopeng MCA chief claimed trial for the six charges after they were read to him before judge Noor Ruzilawati Noor.
First offenders under the law face a maximum RM100,000 fine, up to three years in jail, or both, with repeat offenders liable to a maximum RM250,000 fine, five years jail, or both.

On Jan 11, UM ordered the closure of two KK Mart outlets on its campus due to the doubtful halal status of its sandwiches.
Two days later, Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh raised the issue on social media, which resulted in a back-and-forth statements from politicians.
Although KK Mart had stated that the sandwiches were made from halal ingredients, the Islamic Development Department said the sandwiches themselves had not been certified halal. - Mkini
