MIPP seeks IGP's intervention on 'illegal houses of worship' rally

The Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) has written to Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail with a request for authorities to intervene in the organisation of this Saturday’s rally against “illegal” houses of worship.

MIPP Youth chief Justin Prabakaran said the letter from MIPP president P Punithan was sent yesterday, following an official notification from rally organisers to Dang Wangi police for the rally to be held near the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur.

Additionally, Justin said Punithan had sent an official letter to PN allies PAS and Bersatu, via party presidents Abdul Hadi Awang and Muhyiddin Yassin.

“We (MIPP) are urging their (PAS and Bersatu) members and leaders not to participate in the rally.

“This is to safeguard cooperation within PN and to uphold national harmony, peace, and security,” he told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that Muslim preacher Zamri Vinoth, as the Anti-Illegal Houses of Worship Movement coordinator, confirmed that Dang Wangi police were notified of the rally as required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Zamri said about 141 NGOs are expected to participate in the rally, scheduled to start at 8pm, to ensure that the law against trespassing and the illegal construction of houses of worship is enforced.

Earlier today, National Unity Minister Aaron Ago Dagang told the Dewan Rakyat that any decision to cancel the gathering lies with the Home Ministry. - Mkini
