Wan Saiful: Muhyiddin can moot PN exec council, but I was sacked for it?

Sacked Bersatu leader Wan Saiful Wan Jan has questioned whether party president Muhyiddin Yassin had breached party discipline in pushing for a proposal to establish a new Perikatan Nasional executive council.

In a statement today, Tasek Gelugor MP said he had a “realisation” on the matter following the conclusion of a Bersatu appeals board hearing yesterday, based on allegations which had led to his sacking.

“Among the accusations against me is that I worked to establish a PN executive council and ‘attacked’ the party leadership openly.

“The formation of an executive council was something Muhyiddin himself (recently) proposed in his letter to the presidents of the parties in PN,” said Wan Saiful, who revealed that the appeals proceedings chaired by party member Azhar Azizan Harun had "gone well".

‘Rejected’ idea

It was previously reported that Muhyiddin had mooted the creation of a PN executive council led by PAS and a PN presidential council to be headed by Bersatu as one of the “consensus” reached during a Jan 16 meeting at his home with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and other PAS top leaders.

The purported consensus was then communicated in a Jan 27 letter from Muhyiddin to Hadi, Gerakan president Dominic Lau, and Malaysian Indian People's Party (MIPP) president P Punithan.

Wan Saiful said today that based on the accusation against him, he believed that the idea of a PN executive council had “already been rejected by the political bureau and the supreme council”.

Wan Saiful further targeted Bersatu information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz, who he said had filed the official complaint against him, resulting in his party membership termination.

“So then, is Tun Faisal not going to lodge a complaint about Muhyiddin as well?

“When I pushed for the establishment of an executive council, he said it breached party discipline.

“Now Muhyiddin is pushing for the same thing too. Doesn’t Muhyiddin’s action also breach party discipline?” he asked.

Attacking party members

Addressing a separate allegation that he had openly attacked Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali during a press conference on Sept 29 last year, Wan Saiful claimed Tun Faisal had also openly attacked Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin.

“Doesn’t this violate party discipline as well?

“Are there now two castes within Bersatu? One particular caste seems able to do whatever it wants with the party,” he claimed.

Wan Saiful did not elaborate on Tun Faisal’s alleged attack against Hamzah.

On a separate matter, Tun Faisal today doubled down on his attacks against Muhyiddin’s critics, including those who remain within Bersatu’s ranks.

“Double standards. When they call for the president to step down, it’s supposedly fine. And they didn’t do it just once, but repeatedly...

“But when it is suggested that they themselves push for the deputy president (Hamzah) to step down due to his failure to carry out his duties and responsibilities - including during his time as Sabah election director, and for failing to control his supporters who have repeatedly breached the party constitution and discipline - they get angry.

“It would be better for them to reflect on themselves and reassess all their past actions,” he stressed.

Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin

Yesterday, Tun Faisal had chided supreme council member Yunus Nurdin, who echoed calls for Muhyiddin to resign and voiced direct support for Hamzah to take over temporarily.

Hamzah had publicly denied on multiple occasions that there was a rift with Muhyiddin, including during Bersatu’s annual general assembly last year.

However, the parliamentary opposition leader remained linked to internal dissent believed to have led to disciplinary actions, including sackings and multiple suspensions. - Mkini
