Care for elderly tops PH candidate’s agenda in Stulang

JOHOR BAHRU:
Initiatives on the wellbeing of Stulang residents, particularly senior citizens, will be the focus of the election campaign of Andrew Chen, Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the state assembly seat.

Chen, who seeks a fourth term as assemblyman, said the four initiatives focus on strengthening community centre activities, providing elderly care management training, introducing medical escort services, and offering assistance with will-writing.

He said the agenda was in line with the launch of his election campaign. “My commitment is to provide good service to the people, resolve problems, listen sincerely to the people’s voices, and raise all these issues in the state assembly,” he told reporters today.

He said strengthening the role of community centres would remain a priority to provide healthy social spaces for senior citizens.

The Stulang state seat, which has 60,029 registered voters, will see a four-cornered contest with Chen being challenged by Stanley Tan of Parti Bersama Malaysia, Lim Chin Eng @ Roland Lim of Perikatan Nasional and Bong Seng Heng of Barisan Nasional.

Chen said various programmes had already been organised, including cooking, English and Bahasa Malaysia classes, flower arrangement and calligraphy sessions, which not only help senior citizens make productive use of their time but also encourage social interaction and healthier lifestyles.

He said there is a need to improve public knowledge on elderly care through greater exposure to more systematic care management practices. Another priority is to provide medical escort support to help senior citizens living alone to go for treatment at hospitals or clinics.

“Sometimes their children work elsewhere and they have no one to accompany or help their parents to the hospital, clinic and so on. I will work with medical escort providers in my constituency to offer this service to them,” he said.

Also included in his campaign agenda is a legal assistance initiative to help residents prepare wills, an issue that frequently arises among the local community.

Polling in the Johor state assembly election will be held on July 11, with early voting set for July 7.
