KOTA BARU: Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah expects the 16th general election (GE16) to be held this year, between late October and November.
He said this is based on current political developments as well as ongoing speculation on the matter.
"This year is expected to see GE16. In the near future, there will be the Johor and Negri Sembilan state elections, followed possibly by the Melaka state election.
"After the Melaka state election, Parliament may be dissolved as there are many signs and rumours suggesting a general election this year, although the exact month or date remains uncertain.
"Some say July, after the prime minister returns from an overseas visit, but the stronger view points to late October to November.
"However it happens, the general election will take place this year. Therefore, we must strengthen our commitment and resolve, as well as reinforce the party's position at all levels in preparation for a possible election," he said when speaking at the Pengkalan Chepa Pas annual general meeting, opened by Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud.
Amar, who is also the Kelantan state legislative assembly Speaker, reminded party machinery not to make last-minute preparations.
"We cannot predict or read the minds of voters, especially young voters, as their thinking is different.
"I also remind party machinery not to underestimate the emergence of new parties, as their approaches are able to attract the attention of young voters," he said. - NST
