ALOR STAR: A private higher education institution student was arrested for trying to smuggle 14.63kg of cannabis buds worth RM1.17 million from a neighbouring country on Monday.
Kedah deputy police chief Deputy Commissioner Baderulhisham Baharudin said the 24-year-old suspect was detained during an inspection at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security complex.
During the operation, the suspect was stopped while riding in a pickup truck, and a search uncovered 13 black plastic packages containing the suspected cannabis buds.
"The cannabis buds, weighing a total of 14,630.76g, were hidden under the rear passenger seat of the vehicle. Further checks revealed that the suspect, from Rawang, Selangor, tested positive for cannabis but has no prior criminal record," he told a press conference at the Kedah police headquarters last night.
The seized drugs could have supplied 73,150 addicts.
Initial investigations revealed that the suspect acted as a transporter for a smuggling syndicate operating from Dannok, Thailand, to distribute the drugs to several locations across Malaysia.
Baderulhisham said the suspect claimed to have been involved in the illicit activity since May 25 after being introduced to a man in Dannok.
"The syndicate's modus operandi was to obtain drug supplies from Dannok, hide them under the seats of his family's pickup truck, and bring them into the country through the ICQS complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam.
"The suspect admitted to successfully bringing in drug supplies four times before this to Johor and Kuala Lumpur as directed by the syndicate, receiving a total payment of RM4,000 per delivery," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty, life imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
"The suspect has been remanded for six days until June 21 at the Jitra police station lockup under the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters for further investigation," he said. - NST
