PETALING JAYA:
Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL) today dismissed fare rates for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) circulating on social media as speculation, saying no announcements have been made yet on the matter.

In a statement, the project owner said that figures shared online did not reflect the actual rates for the ECRL, which will begin operating in January 2027.

“ECRL fare rates are currently being refined in consultation with stakeholders, including the Land Public Transport Agency, to ensure that they remain affordable, competitive, and user-friendly, in line with the objective of providing quality public transportation services to the people,” it said.

The company also warned against making assumptions based on unverified information.

“The transport ministry will announce the official fare rates once the evaluation and approval process has been finalised,” it said.

The 665km ECRL line will connect Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang on the east coast with Selangor on the west coast, with passenger services expected to significantly cut travel times.

Once operations begin, the journey from Kota Bharu to Gombak is expected to take about four hours, compared with around seven hours by road.

The project was 93.7% complete as of April. - FMT
