TANAH MERAH: Authorities have seized 2,560 vape pods worth RM256,000, believed to be bound for Thailand, and arrested a 42-year-old man in a roadblock operation in Lalang Pepuyu today.
General Operations Force Southeast Brigade commander Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Radzi Hussain said the suspect was detained at about 12.15pm during the inspection.
He said the man was travelling in a van when he was stopped at the Lalang Pepuyu roadblock.
"Checks inside the vehicle led to the discovery of several boxes containing vape pods believed to be intended for smuggling into Thailand.
"The driver failed to produce valid documents for the goods," he said.
Vape pods are small, replaceable cartridges used in electronic cigarettes, containing liquid that is heated to produce vapour for inhalation.
Ahmad Radzi said the vape pods were valued at about RM256,000, while the van was estimated at RM60,000, bringing the total seizure to RM316,000.
He said initial investigations showed the suspect had allegedly collected the vape pods from several locations around Tanah Merah before attempting to transport them to Thailand via an illegal jetty in Kampung Rahmat, Rantau Panjang.
"Based on the suspect's statement, the consignment was destined for Thailand, where vape products are prohibited under its laws, including for distribution, sale, possession and use," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961.
Ahmad Radzi said the suspect, seized items and vehicle had been handed over to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry for further investigation and action. - NST
