KUALA TERENGGANU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has detected the activities of foreigners in the state who use rented vehicles to carry passengers and transport goods.
Terengganu RTD director Mohd Zamri Samion said investigations found that most of the individuals detained involved Rohingya ethnic groups who offered the service using private vehicles rented from locals.
He said the activity not only violated the law, but also endangered the lives of other road users as the drivers involved did not have a competent driving licence and a motor vehicle licence.
"We have detected the activities of foreigners, especially Rohingya, who use private vehicles rented by locals to carry passengers, transport children and carry various tasks in their daily activities.
"This matter cannot be taken lightly because most of them do not have a competent driving licence and a motor vehicle licence. Let's take the recent case of a Rohingya man who drove dangerously, causing the death of a motorcyclist," he said at a press conference at Terengganu State RTD office here, today.
Mohd Zamri said Terengganu RTD had seized 114 vehicles and issued 559 summonses for various offences as a result of the Foreigner Enforcement Operation (Ops PEWA) carried out since June 1 until today.
He said 93 of the vehicles seized involved Rohingya ethnic drivers who did not have any driving qualifications or valid vehicle ownership documents.
"We want to send a clear message that strict action will be taken against foreign drivers who break the law, and even against vehicle owners who are found to be in cahoots with vehicle rental companies," he said.
Mohd Zamri said RTD also carried out undercover activities and entered villages to detect foreigners who drive vehicles without valid licenses and documents. - NST
