SG4 states expected to hold state elections concurrently with GE16

ALOR STAR: The four Perikatan Nasional-led states, known as State Government 4 (SG4), are expected to hold their state elections concurrently with the 16th General Election (GE16).

Pas central election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said the move would be more effective, streamline party machinery movement and save costs.

He said he had previously discussed the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who appeared to agree that the state and parliamentary elections should be held simultaneously.

"My hope is for the state elections in the four states and the parliamentary election to be held together. We will not have to repeat the work, which would consume time if done separately. Holding them concurrently will save costs and ease the work of the Election Commission.

"I have spoken with the prime minister about holding simultaneous elections, and he agreed.

"When I asked about the election date, he said it could be discussed," he said at a press conference after the launch of the Kedah Pas election machinery at the Kedah Pas Complex in Kota Sarang Semut here last night.

Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu did not dissolve their state assemblies during GE15 in 2022, opting instead to hold separate state elections in August 2023.

Only Perlis, which was then administered by Barisan Nasional, chose to dissolve its state assembly in 2022 to allow its state election to run concurrently with GE15.

Commenting on the possibility of Pas entering a new political alignment ahead of GE16, Sanusi explained that the party must constantly evolve to remain relevant.

"All parties must move based on current needs and demands to match changing mindsets. A party must keep moving and cannot remain static, or it will be left behind and become a Stone Age party.

"Pas must also move forward as long as our principles remain unchanged and our struggle stays the same. But strategies must be in place to win over voters, and every party will seize the same opportunities," he said. - NST
