Former Umno vice-president Isa Samad has been stripped of his “Tan Sri” title after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar consented to the revocation of the Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM) award conferred on him.
In a statement today, the Prime Minister’s Department said the revocation took effect on June 8, following Isa’s conviction and subsequent imprisonment at Sungai Buloh Prison in Selangor.
It said the decision was made in accordance with paragraphs XXV and XXVIA of the Statutes of the Most Esteemed Order of the Crown of Malaysia, which allow federal honours to be withdrawn upon a recipient’s criminal conviction.
The department added that the move also aligns with a decree by Sultan Ibrahim on the withdrawal of honours, issued during the Federal Awards, Stars, and Medals Investiture Ceremony at Istana Negara on Sept 7, 2024.
Isa began serving his sentence in February after the Federal Court reinstated his corruption conviction and six-year jail term.
The former Negeri Sembilan menteri besar and federal minister was initially convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court in 2021 on nine corruption charges, receiving a six-year jail sentence and a RM15.45 million fine.
He was later acquitted by the Court of Appeal in 2024, before a three-member Federal Court bench chaired by judge Nordin Hassan allowed the prosecution’s appeal and reinstated the conviction.
The apex court ruled that the appellate court had erred in overturning the High Court’s findings and held that the trial judge’s decision was supported by evidence.
It found that the elements of the offence under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 had been proven beyond a reasonable doubt for all nine charges. - Mkini
