KUALA LUMPUR: Netizens have raised food safety concerns after a viral video appeared to show a street vendor using water from a pipe near a toilet to prepare drinks for sale.
The discussion stemmed from a Threads post by user zaidonmuhammadamri, which showed a vendor allegedly refilling water from a pipe near a toilet into large containers used for beverage preparation.
In the caption, the user questioned the pricing of the drinks, asking why customers were being charged RM5 when the water source appeared to be untreated and unsuitable.
The clip sparked mixed reactions online, with some users saying it reinforced concerns over hygiene standards among certain street beverage vendors.
One user, 4meeerfahim, said: "Even though not everyone does this, this is why I've stopped buying these jug drinks."
Several others who identified themselves as vendors stressed that they maintained strict hygiene standards and used filtered or boiled water in their preparations.
User noraswanimahidah said she was disappointed by the video, adding that she used only filtered water from a home purification system to prepare drinks and would opt for bottled water if supplies ran low.
Another user, fahmi_emdee, said vendors should at least use commercially available filtered water instead of direct tap water.
"At the very least, buy water from the 10-sen filtered water machines usually found outside shops. It's cleaner. This is tap water we're talking about," he said.
Street beverage seller anisahabdmajid said her husband brought filtered water from home for preparation, while another vendor, syerazamry, said she used filtered water that is also boiled before being used. - NST
