Lost wallet row over alleged RM10,000 goes viral

SEMENYIH: A man who found a lost wallet at a supermarket was confronted by its owners over an alleged RM10,000 in missing cash, with videos of the incident later going viral on social media.

The video, uploaded today by TikTok user "C J", showed a couple, believed to be Chinese nationals, demanding that the man return the money allegedly kept inside the wallet.

The man repeatedly denied taking any cash inside the wallet.

In a subsequent video, the wallet owners said the wallet had been left behind at the supermarket's freezer section after one of them stepped away to answer an urgent phone call.

They claimed CCTV footage showed a child picking up the wallet and handing it to his mother before the family left the premises.

Police later identified the family through a vehicle registration number from the CCTV recording, after which the man went to a police station in Semenyih and handed over the wallet.

However, the woman seen taking the wallet in the footage did not accompany him to the police station.

In the video, the wallet owners demanded the woman to show up to the police station to help with the investigation.

The TikTok video has garnered more than 270,000 views and attracted mixed reactions online, with some users questioning the claim that RM10,000 had been inside the wallet.

"If it was withdrawn from the bank, where is the evidence?" user Mummy Triple R wrote.

"The CCTV does not prove the existence of the cash as it only identifies the movement of the wallet from one person to another," user Raja Kapoor wrote.

Others argued that the man should not be accused without proof.

"In this case, I can't see any solid proof that he committed any foul play. It would be better not to tarnish a person's good name by uploading this," user misso95 wrote.

Some users also questioned why the wallet had not been handed over to supermarket staff or taken directly to a police station.

"But what's wrong is that his wife took the wallet and put it in her bag. Why didn't she go directly to the counter and tell the cashier? I don't understand," user Nuryanah wrote.

Kajang police later confirmed they received a report on the incident on Wednesday night and arrested the man who found the wallet.

The suspect was subsequently remanded for four days to assist in the investigation. - NST
