Pas accused of meddling in Bersatu's internal affairs in letter

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) has accused Pas of interfering in its internal affairs, particularly on issues involving political cooperation in Perlis, Kelantan and Kedah, as well as disciplinary actions taken against several of its leaders.

In a letter sighted by Berita Harian, dated May 25, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said it was inappropriate for Pas to interfere in matters concerning the discipline and management of member parties within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.

He noted that the Registrar of Societies (ROS) had already confirmed that Bersatu's actions against its elected representatives were in accordance with the party's constitution.

"It is even more inappropriate when the ROS, as the regulator of all registered organisations, has affirmed that Bersatu's actions against its representatives are constitutional," he said in the letter addressed to PN and Pas leaders.

Muhyiddin also expressed disappointment over the failure to replace certain state executive councillors and deputy speakers in Kedah and Kelantan despite the affected representatives having been subjected to disciplinary action by the party.

He said the Kedah government continued to work with the assemblymen for Suka Menanti and Sungai Tiang, whose Bersatu memberships had been revoked.

"The Political Bureau demands that the Kedah Menteri Besar respect the principle of power-sharing within the government and take immediate steps to replace the Kedah executive councillor and the Kedah State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker.

"Bersatu will also write officially to the Kelantan Menteri Besar to request the replacement of the Kelantan State Legislative Assembly deputy speaker, who has been expelled by the party's disciplinary board and has lost his membership rights in Bersatu," he said.

In the same letter, Muhyiddin dismissed allegations that Bersatu intended to return to Pakatan Harapan (PH) after the 16th General Election (GE16).

He described the claims as malicious slander that had been circulated among Pas leaders.

"Bersatu is deeply disappointed by the false allegations and malicious narratives suggesting that the party intends to rejoin PH after GE16.

"Unfortunately, Bersatu was never directly asked about the matter during meetings between Pas and Bersatu.

"It is regrettable that these allegations have been accepted by Pas and used as a reason not to continue cooperation with Bersatu.

"Pas appears to be more receptive to groups that continuously spread slander and seek to undermine unity between Bersatu and Pas," he said.

On the issue of admitting other Malay-based political parties into PN, Muhyiddin said Bersatu had never opposed efforts towards Malay-Muslim unity but believed electoral cooperation should be prioritised before any formal membership was considered.

He said Bersatu's position was that PN could first establish electoral cooperation with such parties, while their admission as component members could be considered at a later stage.

According to him, the proposal had previously been agreed upon by consensus at a PN Supreme Council meeting and was reaffirmed during the council's meeting on May 16.

He added that a committee had been established to refine the terms of electoral cooperation, including seat allocations.

"The PN secretary-general should immediately convene discussions within this committee to provide an avenue for new parties to cooperate with PN," he said.

The New Straits Times, at the time of writing, has reached out to Bersatu to verify the authenticity of the letter. - NST
