Venue owners urged to screen events after 300 detained in Sabah raid

KOTA KINABALU: Event venue owners and operators have been urged to exercise greater vigilance when approving rentals following the arrest of a deviant group involved in a gathering here.

Likas assemblyman Tham Yun Fook said premises owners should carry out basic background checks on organisers and understand the purpose of events before giving approval.

He said while owners might not be directly responsible for activities held on their premises, they still bore a moral and social duty to ensure their facilities were not misused for activities that could spark controversy, disturb public order or breach legal provisions.

The advice comes after a raid, triggered by public complaints, led to the detention of 300 people, including 12 organisers and group leaders, during a gathering held at a school hall in Likas. https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2026/06/1452780/300-detained-sabah-o…

The two-day programme was linked to Jemaah Ahmadiyah Qadiani, which was declared deviant by the Sabah Fatwa Council Committee in 2007.

Authorities also seized banners featuring the group's founder and leaders, along with books, documents, attendance lists and other related materials.

Tham, from Parti Warisan, praised the police and the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) for their swift and professional action.

He said activities that contradicted existing fatwas and regulations should not be taken lightly as they could cause public confusion and affect religious harmony.

He also called for closer cooperation between enforcement agencies, premises operators and the public to ensure Sabah remained peaceful, harmonious and respectful of the law. - NST
