Drop your Mat Rempit recklessness especially when your wife is riding pillion

THE phrase ‘devil-may-care’, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, is an adjective that describes a reckless, carefree or happy-go-lucky attitude. Someone with this trait acts without worrying about the future, rules, or the potential bad consequences of their choices.

This description was befitting for a motorcyclist involved in a fender bender purportedly along the Gombak stretch of the Lebuhraya Duta-Ulu Klang (DUKE) on Aug 12.

Dashcam footage belonging to Threader DIVA (@lunaafaudzi) showed a narrow escape as the motorcyclist is seen taking a corner at excessive speed.

He inadvertently loses control and crashes the scooter into the barrier, leaving him and his poor wife in a heap on the expressway.

Luckily, the driver was able to hit the brakes in time and avoided a nasty collision with the stricken motorcyclist and his wife. She confessed to have been severely shaken by the near miss and hoped that both the biker and his wife were fine.

The clip has generated 31.5K likes, 4.6K comments, 3.9K re-posts and 23K shares at time of publication. The poster also appealed for any updates on the welfare of both the husband and wife.

A few bystanders at the scene reported that the biker seemed fine but the wife wasn’t able to move.

That’s when a number of netizens decided to let this responsible husband know what they thought of his Mat Rempit (daredevil biking) tendencies.

One unimpressed motorist asked what sort of biker takes a corner lying down with a pillion riding shotgun? Was “stupid” the correct term to apply here, he sarcastically asked.

The “stupid” theme was continued among quite a number of commenters who couldn’t quite believe the sheer recklessness of the biker in question. One road user reminded the biker that “was DUKE, not the Sepang race circuit”.

The fact that the biker seemed oblivious to his duty of care towards his spouse was a source of irritation for many commenters.

One pragmatic observer asked if the biker ever did think what would happen to his children if both parents perished in an accident of his doing.

The same pertinent advice was also given by the motorcyclist first on the scene to stop to offer assistance.

Some two-wheel enthusiasts also pointed out the hazards of taking a corner at speed in a scooter. Unlike a “superbike”, It was not the right vehicle for such high-speed manoeuvres.

“Now you know pain, don’t be so selfish next time.” That was the message from one citizen who admonished the biker for having little regard for the wife’s safety.

The accident victim’s deficiencies were outlined one-by-one by this unimpressed fellow biker. Ultimately, the advice was to ride easy, take care of safety and do not push the motorcycle beyond its capabilities.

Special praise was reserved for the driver of the car for being able to take evasive and decisive action to avoid running over the couple.

For good measure, a few eagle-eyed dash cam techs posted still images of the incident to absolve any car drivers of blame as there was no contact between two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles on the clip.

It was also noted other experienced motorists that the white divider lines on the road have a tendency to throw off the tyres’ alignment.

The sense that such daredevil riders didn’t care for their spouses was summed up best by this disgusted feminist.

“After labouring to give birth, the wife now has to suffer an accident due to your recklessness,” she grumbled. “Men do not appreciate the hardships of childbirth. Should a wife pass on, he’ll just find another in three months.”

The message is loud and clear. Don’t be a hero Mat Rempit rider when your wife is riding pillion. The consequences for such recklessness may be severe or even fatal for the pillion-riding spouse.

In fact, best to curb any and all Mat Rempit tendencies. But that would be wishful thinking. –  Focus Malaysia
