DoE officials uncover 3 scam attempts using fake govt papers

 The Kuala Lumpur environment director says the matter was uncovered after the department received a complaint from a diving equipment supplier.

The environment department said the names of several Kuala Lumpur environment department officers had been misused on fake government order documents.

KUALA LUMPUR:

Officials of the environment department (DoE) have detected at least three attempted scams using fake government order documents that misused the department’s name and logo, and the identities of several department officers.

Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab, the Kuala Lumpur environment director, said the matter was uncovered on Aug 3 after the department received a complaint from a diving equipment supplier registered as a vendor or contractor in the government procurement system.

She noted that the company received a suspicious government order document featuring the department’s logo on the cover, with a total order value of RM26,000. “These fake government order documents were found to have misused the names of several Kuala Lumpur environment department officers,” she said in a statement today.

Further checks revealed inquiries regarding government orders for organising an event using scuba equipment that also involved another company with a total value exceeding RM100,000.

The document was also found to be misleading as it showed a total amount of about RM135,000 for the same service using the same document number. She said a police report was lodged today.

She urged companies and members of the public to check and verify the authenticity of questionable government order documents. - FMT
