Mukhriz proposes new dates after his debate also hits brick wall

Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir proposed new dates for his debate with his former special assistant-turned-rival Haris Che Mat, after police blocked the debate.
The debate was to take place today - a day after the debate between Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Umno supreme council member Nazri Abdul Aziz, which was also blocked by cops on public order grounds.
Mukhriz said the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters had said that the debate did not fulfil the 10-day notice required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.
Therefore, Mukhriz proposed that the debate be held on April 27 or May 5.
"I hope that Haris (as the organiser) can convey this to the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters about the suggested dates," he said in a blog posting yesterday.
Mukhriz said he was also puzzled about concerns over public order if his debate with Haris went ahead.
"Surely a matured debate can be held without sparking a fight that could threaten public safety," he said.
Mukhriz reminded police that under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, the public only need to notify the police about a gathering at least 10 days ahead.

"It is not within the police's powers to approve or reject the notice," he stressed.
Haris had previously accused Mukhriz of possessing assets amounting to more than a billion ringgit and challenged the latter to a debate on his wealth.
Mukhriz subsequently agreed and promised to donate all the money, if it can be proven that he was a billionaire as claimed.- Mkini
