Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was right in saying that comparing him to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was like comparing apples to oranges, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Salleh Said Keruak.
Instead, Salleh said an apples to apples comparison would be to compare Mahathir to the many dictators who were ousted during his time as prime minister.
“Mahathir carries with him a lot of baggage. He was prime minister during the time a number of regimes surrounding Malaysia were ousted.
“And Mahathir was compared as apples to apples with these ousted dictators. So comparing Najib to Mahathir would be negative for Najib,” he said in a blog posting today.
Salleh said the western media had accused Mahathir of wasting RM100 billion of the nation’s money with an estimated RM100 billion more in “leakages”.
“This was published in a book and is another Mahathir legacy which Najib should not be compared with,” he said.
Salleh added that Mahathir had in 1969 accused then-prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman of being a “Chinese lover” and is now levelling similar claims against Najib.
“In 2013, Mahathir accused Najib of neglecting the Malays and of pandering to the Chinese whereas it is the Malays who support Umno.
“For sure Najib cannot be compared to Mahathir,” he said.
Mahathir in a forum last night defended his track record.
The former prime minister said his use of the International Security Act (ISA) which allowed for detention without trial was based on a law that was formulated by past leaders.
Mahathir said in contrast, Najib had created “worse” detention without trial laws, in apparent reference to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 which was introduced to replaced the ISA.
“He’s not like me. It’s like apple and orange. He is apple and I am orange,” he had said.- Mkini
