MACHANG: There is no current proposal to allow for admission of non-Bumiputera students into Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) in the near future, the chairman of UiTM’s board of directors, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamad, said today.
However, the university would strive to enhance its competitiveness in line with the rapid changes taking place worldwide.
Syed Zainal said UiTM was working on improving the existing curriculum to meet current challenges.
“If not done in the near future, Bumiputera graduates who join the job market may have difficulty finding employment,” he told reporters at the UiTM campus here today, according to Bernama.
His remarks come in the wake of a recent controversy over places for non-Bumiputera students in the government’s matriculation programme for entry into universities.
The education ministry announced an increase in the number of places from 25,000 to 40,000, with 90% of the places going to Bumiputeras and 10% for non-Bumiputeras.
Syed Zainal was also asked for his views about concerns that the number of places for admission of Bumiputera students into the university might be reduced if the government decided to open UiTM to non-Bumiputeras.
He noted that some proposals had been raised for UiTM to provide places for non-Bumiputera students to enhance Bumiputera competitiveness. However, attention should be given towards other improvements, he said. - FMT
