COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported a total of 19 new Covid-19 fatalities yesterday (Jan 6), bringing the cumulative death toll to 31,628.
Malaysia has the highest number of deaths per capita in the Asean and East Asian regions with 958 deaths per 1 million population.
From the newly reported deaths yesterday, four died before they could receive treatment at a hospital.
Selangor recorded the highest number of new deaths at four.
The remaining deaths were in Johor (3), Kelantan (2), Pahang (2), Sabah (2), Terengganu (2), Malacca (1), Negeri Sembilan (1), Perak (1) and Penang (1).
No new deaths were reported in Kedah, Perlis, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya.
A total of 16 out of the 19 reported deaths happened in the last seven days.
The remaining deaths happened more than a week ago but were only recorded yesterday due to delays in data reporting.
An average of 30 Covid-19 deaths was reported daily in the last 30 days compared to the seven-day average of 24, indicating a downward trend.
As of yesterday, there were 39,779 active Covid-19 cases. This is a reduction of 4.5 percent from the 41,661 active infections a week ago.
Compared to 30 days ago, the number of active cases has fallen by 34.2 percent from 60,413.
Cluster-linked infections
The Health Ministry's post-midnight update also provided further insights into the new Covid-19 infections yesterday.
From the 3,543 new cases yesterday, a total of 111 of them could be traced to ongoing Covid-19 clusters.
From the cluster-linked cases, 68 (61.3 percent) were from workplaces while 21 (18.9 percent) were imported cases.
The remaining cases were traced to clusters related to education institutions (7 - 6.3 percent), detention centres (7 - 6.3 percent), high-risk groups such as old folks homes (6 - 5.4 percent) and community transmissions (2 - 1.8 percent). - Mkini
