PAS has already committed to the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition and is unlikely to seek another alliance with Umno, said Bersatu supreme council member Eddin Syazlee Shith.
Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Eddin said the Islamic party was part of PN’s election machinery launch last month and has never informed the coalition’s leadership council of any wish to work with Umno.
“We have launched our machinery, so PAS won’t seek cooperation with Umno anymore.
“I don’t think PAS members will forgo decisions agreed upon by PN component parties,” he said.
Eddin added that he understood talks of PAS-Umno cooperation do not equate to an electoral pact.
“The meaning of cooperation can be seen in various forms... (Based on my interpretation) if PAS wants to keep ties with Umno, there is no problem.
“What I know is when it comes to the election, PAS will be with Bersatu in PN... If Umno is not receptive to PAS’ (overtures), we have to think about (what it means),” he said.
Top PAS leaders including its president Abdul Hadi Awang have repeatedly claimed they are in talks with Umno. However, Umno leaders have repeatedly denied this of late.
Earlier this year, Selangor Umno talked up the idea of collaborating with PAS but such talk has since died down.
Umno leaders have set out the condition that any cooperation with PAS must be preceded by PAS breaking ties with Bersatu. - Mkini
