KAJANG: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that Malay rights and the position of Islam will be protected.
Speaking in his first press conference after his appointment as prime minister, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said the coalition, and the new unity government he leads, will uphold Malay rights and the position of Islam as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
Expressing his “profound appreciation” to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Malay rulers, Anwar said it was heartening that they had endorsed him as the prime minister.
“I’m grateful to Allah for this change that Malaysians have been waiting for,” he said.
“I understand the need to uphold Islam as the religion of the federation and to protect Malay and Bumiputera rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.”
He pledged to safeguard the rights of Malaysians, regardless of race or religion.
Anwar said Malaysians, particularly those in Sarawak and Sabah, would not be marginalised under his administration.
“I want to stress that I am the prime minister for Malaysians of all races so that we can unite the country as one,” he said. - FMT
