Newly minted Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has pledged a smaller cabinet as compared to the one headed by his predecessor Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
"The size of the cabinet definitely will be smaller," he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
Anwar said he will refer to each coalition that agreed to form the unity government for their list of cabinet minister candidates.
"We have to understand that a unity government means that a prime minister must refer to each party and they will propose the names, I must give such consideration.
"I will request the new cabinet members to agree to the proposal to reduce their salaries, and this is in the process of discussion and preparation (to be carried out) as soon as possible," he added.
Previously, Ismail Sabri's cabinet comprised 31 ministers, including four senior ministers. He also had 38 deputy ministers.
Ismail Sabri chose to retain most of the ministers appointed by Muhyiddin Yassin while the latter was premier. Muhyiddin’s “oversized” cabinet of 70 ministers and deputy ministers was heavily criticised.
Ismail Sabri, who was named as BN's prime ministerial candidate during the recently concluded general election, had pledged to streamline the cabinet if BN won the polls. - Mkini
