Anwar is Malaysia's 10th PM

Anwar Ibrahim will be sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister at 5pm today.

After days of negotiations, and political uncertainty, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had decided to appoint the prime minister after meeting with the Conference of Rulers.

Anwar is expected to lead a unity government with BN as Harapan’s main partner.

In a statement from the palace, the King said Anwar’s appointment was in line with Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) the Federal Constitution in which His Majesty may appoint at his discretion an MP whom he believes to have majority support as premier.

Pakatan Harapan has 82 seats in Parliament, short of the 112 needed for a simple majority.

However, Harapan has offered BN - which has 30 seats - a 10-point deal, which includes a deputy prime minister position.

Meanwhile, Warisan has also pledged its support for a Harapan-BN government, giving Anwar 115 in total - if all BN MPs toe the line.

Sarawak’s GPS with 23 seats and Sabah’s GRS with 6 seats have both said they would adhere with the Agong’s decision - further solidifying Anwar’s position.

His main rival, Muhyiddin Yassin had claimed to have 115 MPs on his side on Tuesday - but the palace did not accept this.

It is believed this is due to change in sentiments from both BN and GPS.

Harapan has 34.1 percent of the popular vote, while BN has 25.2 percent - meaning Anwar’s Harapan-BN government will have majority support.

It will be the first post-election government since 2008 to have more than 50 percent popular support.

In the palace statement, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong reminded those that did not, that they had not lost everything.

His Majesty called for political cooperation by all MPs for the sake of the country.

The monarch also advised the new prime minister to not inflict further political calamity onto the people, and to build a stable government.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also paid tribute to his fellow Malay rulers, for their continued support in His Majesty carrying out his duties as a constitutional monarch.
