JOHOR BAHRU: Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin has hit back at Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid for describing the relationship between Bersatu and PAS as a marriage of convenience.
Speaking to reporters during a walkabout here, the Bersatu president pointed out that numerous Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties left the coalition after it lost the last general election.
“PAS is the founder of PN and Gerakan joined later. So this is not a marriage of convenience,” said Muhyiddin.
“BN are the ones in a marriage of convenience as there used to be 14 parties (in the coalition) and now there are only three.”
Earlier today, Mahdzir claimed PN’s cooperation would soon end as Bersatu and PAS were merely in a “marriage of convenience”.
He was commenting on the differing views between Muhyiddin and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan regarding cooperation with BN after Saturday’s election.
Muhyiddin also said that PN would contest the election on its own.
“There is no more saying we want to get along with BN, Pakatan Harapan (PH), no! We stand on our own.
“We fight on our own strength. That will increase the confidence (of voters and show) that we are capable,” he said.
Earlier Muhyiddin, the PN chairman, said he had never given anyone the mandate to hold negotiations with BN to form the government after the general election.
