PETALING JAYA: Former Padang Besar MP Zahidi Zainul Abidin has warned that Barisan Nasional (BN) will lose its grip over Perlis in the general election (GE15).
He predicted that BN will face defeat in at least two parliamentary seats in Perlis — Arau and Padang Besar — as well as nine state seats.
“In Arau, it is certain that BN will lose the Guar Sanji, Pauh, Simpang Empat and Sanglar state seats.
“In Kangar, the coalition is expected to lose the Kuala Perlis, Indera Kayangan, Sena and Bintong seats,” he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.
Zahidi added that in Padang Besar, BN was likely to lose the Titi Tinggi state seat.
He also said Shahidan Kassim was not likely to have a problem winning the Arau parliamentary seat. As for other areas, BN had a 50-50 chance of winning.
He claimed that his predictions were based on “studies and the current (political) situation”.
Shahidan won the Arau seat in the last general election with a majority of 4,856 votes and Zahidi in Padang Besar with a majority of 1,438 votes.
For GE15, both Shahidan and Zahidi found themselves dropped from the list of BN’s candidates.
Zahidi was dropped in favour of Puteri Umno chief Zahida Zarik Khan, whereas Shahidan was axed from the list to make way for Rozabil Abd Rahman.
Shahidan then declared that he would defend the Arau seat on Perikatan Nasional’s ticket.
Zahidi is contesting the Padang Besar parliamentary seat as well as the Titi Tinggi state seat as an independent.
Following this, Umno sacked them from the party on Nov 7. - FMT
