SHAH ALAM: Cancer patient Anis Mardiana Abdullah did not allow her illness to stop her from receiving her doctorate degree today at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).
Anis, 45, who is unable to stand for long due to her illness, stood up to receive her PhD in transport and logistics studies from UiTM pro-chancellor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor.
Anis said she did not want to trouble university officials about her condition and defied the pain to complete the ceremony.
She also said she had not expected to be selected as the recipient of a book award from the Malaysia Technology Development Corporation.
Anis said the cancer was detected after she had completed her studies. She had no serious symptoms before that, although she noticed trembling in her hands when writing, “which I thought was due to stress”.
A check-up later found thyroid cancer which was later confirmed to be stage 4 colon cancer. She is to undergo surgery next week. - FMT
