PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has offered his former deputy, Anwar Ibrahim, his well wishes following his appointment as prime minister.
“I congratulate Anwar on his appointment as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister. All the best,” the Pejuang chairman said in a brief statement.
While Mahathir and Anwar had made up before the 2018 general election and worked together when Pakatan Harapan was in power, their relationship eventually soured again after the fall of the PH government.
Before the toppling of the PH government in February 2020, Mahathir had repeatedly promised to hand over the top post to Anwar, who was regarded by PH supporters as their prime minister-designate.
The duo traded barbs on the campaign trail for the recently concluded general election, with Anwar blaming Mahathir for PH’s failures during its 22 months in power.
In reply, Mahathir told the PKR president to stop blaming him for his (Anwar’s) failure to become the prime minister.
Yesterday, following Anwar’s swearing-in, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir said the party will be praying for his success in the top post.
Mukhriz, who is Mahathir’s son, hoped that Anwar’s appointment would usher the nation into more stable times after enduring more than two years of instability. - FMT
