Several areas in Johor experienced flash floods yesterday evening following hours of heavy rain, such as in Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Kluang.
The Johor Civil Defence Force (APM) said flash floods occurred around 4.40pm at Kampung Baru Sengkang, Kulai, about 7.30pm at Kampung Lukut, Kota Tinggi and around 8.30pm at Kampung Ithnin Maarof, Kluang.
Temporary relief centres (PPS) were activated at Dewan Kampung Baru Sengkang and Dewan Raya Kampung Murni in Kulai due to the flash flood at the village, APM said in a series of Facebook postings on flood updates in the state last night.
Meanwhile, APM said they sent a team to Kampung Ithnin Maarof, Kluang after they received a call from the village chief about the flash flood.
They found five houses were damaged due to the flood in the village.
In Kampung Lukut, Kota Tinggi, APM said the water levels are now under control and there is no need yet to open up any PPS in the area.
Incumbent Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, who is defending her seat, said she cancelled her campaigning events in the Ulu Choh and Tanjung Piai last night to visit the flood victims at the PPS.
According to Teo, in a Facebook post last night, 29 families – a total of 125 individuals – were placed at the Kampung Melayu Sengkang PPS.
“With the help of the volunteers from my team, we just now sent mineral water, adult and baby diapers, medicine for children and adults, biscuits, slippers, and toiletries for them all.
“I would like to apologise to all Pakatan Harapan supporters who were waiting for me at Ulu Choh and Tanjung Piai,” she said in a video she posted on Facebook last night.
Her opponent from BN, Chua Jian Boon, also posted on Facebook that he visited the flooded areas in Kulai as well.
“Flood happened, Chua is on the way to the ground. Through easy and tough times, we will stand together. For the rakyat,” he said. - Mkini
