GE15 used in latest e-wallet SMS phishing scam

Financial scammers appear to be using the general election as a means to access e-wallets.

Mobile phone users have been receiving SMS alerts from a number listed as “GOV”, claiming that funds have been banked into their e-wallets.

They are then invited to check the status of the funds by clicking on a link, disguised to appear legitimate.

The link directs to a page, which requires users to provide their phone numbers and other details.

The message also tries to make it seem that it is an attempt by BN to buy votes through disbursing government aid.

“Undilah BN!!” it reads.

In previous scams, a user’s personal details are used to access debit or credit cards linked to the e-wallets, on which unauthorised purchases will be made.

When contacted, Touch ‘n Go customer service urged users not to respond to the message.

It also urged users who believed they were duped to contact their banks to block their credit or debit cards and lodge a police report.

Public warned not to click links

Last August, Touch ‘n Go cautioned users from responding to or clicking on links in any text messages claiming that funds have been deposited into their e-wallets.

The MACC also issued a statement warning the public to be wary of messages received from “GOV”.

At the time, the scammers used MySejahtera and Covid-19 as a way to trick users into clicking the links.

Then, users were told the government had deposited financial assistance, as pandemic aid, into their Touch ‘n Go e-wallets.

Similarly, users were then invited to click on a link to check if the funds have been deposited. - Mkini
