ALOR SETAR: Anwar Ibrahim took PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to task after the latter claimed Anwar was being used by DAP to woo the Malay electorate.
Hadi was fixated on race-related matters despite the fact that people were more concerned about the economy, Anwar said.
“I am not stupid, Hadi,” Anwar said at a ceramah here.
“I believe that I need to take care of the Malays who are the majority. (But) if I want to lead this country, I need to take care of the Chinese like my own family. The same goes for the Indians,” he said.
Hadi had been reported as saying recently that DAP was using Anwar, as well as its own Malay candidates to fish for Malay votes, the way Singapore’s People’s Action Party (PAP) had used Yusof Ishak to remain in power. DAP began as an offshoot of the PAP, which has ruled Singapore since 1959.
Anwar also spoke about the monopoly on rice imports by Bernas, the national rice distributor.
He said MPs from Pakatan Harapan, such as Mahfuz Omar, and Chan Ming Kai had spoken out against the Bernas monopoly.
He said the company, which is listed on the stock exchange, should allocate shares to padi farmers’ associations and padi smallholders so that they can enjoy the profits.
Mahfuz criticised Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s decision to call for a general election during the monsoon season.
He said it would burden the civil servants who had to juggle between their duties in managing polling centres as well as aiding flood victims.
“Can you imagine how stupid this government is?” said Mahfuz, who was previously MP for Pokok Sena in two separate terms. - FMT
