Mat Sabu won’t have it easy this time, warns GTA man

Amanah president Mohamad Sabu cannot rest on the massive majority he won in 2018, says Fahmi Bazlan (right) of Pejuang.

PETALING JAYA: Without hot issues to exploit, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu will not have an easy ride in the contest for the Kota Raja seat, according to the Gerakan Tanah Air candidate, Fahmi Bazlan.

Mohamad’s 71,142-majority in the 2018 elections might send a chill down the spine of any rival, but Fahmi said the sentiments on the ground sent a different message.

Fahmi, 35, said: “From what I gather from the voters, they had an MP who was hardly available when they needed him.”

Speaking to FMT in Kota Kemuning, Fahmi said he had heard that even loyal supporters of Pakatan Harapan had asked for a fresh candidate to replace Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, but their voices were ignored.

“So when Mat Sabu was named to defend the seat, we took it as our chance to win,” said Fahmi, who is the Pejuang youth chief.

Fahmi said the current election campaign was more muted compared to before because of the absence of major issues like the 1MDB scandal to pull in the crowds.

“Now that the 1MDB issue is over, many candidates have no strong issues to exploit. Currently, no single party can create a wave, so the playing field is even for all parties contesting,” he said.

He said at least 60% of the 244,000 voters in Kota Raja are fence sitters. “The rest are those keen to cast their ballots for candidates based on what they have to offer and on their performances.”

Fahmi said he intended to break down the double standard in the quality of infrastructure provided in the constituency.

“For instance, if you look at Kota Kemuning, the infrastructure is well maintained. Drive a bit further to the next area Jalan Kebun Tambahan, the road condition there is terrible and the drains are clogged,” he said.

Eight candidates are in the fray in Kota Raja.

Mohamad is being challenged by Fahmi, D Kajendran (Barisan Nasional), Mohamed Diah Baharun (Perikatan Nasional), Sarah Afiqah Zainol Arif (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and three independents. - FMT
