MIC top two bank on song and dance to woo voters

GE15 | MIC’s top two leaders SA Vigneswaran and M Saravanan are hoping to capture the hearts of voters with songs praising them.

Saravanan, who is defending the Tapah seat in Perak, outdid his president with a music video.

Titled ‘Idola Warga Tapah’ (Tapah residents’ idol), the video, which appeared to be filmed in India, featured singers and dancers as well as clips of the outgoing human resources minister at various events, including playing football.

There are also images of Saravanan with the late former MIC president S Samy Vellu and caretaker prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Among others, the song praised the 54-year-old minister as a great leader and Tamil poet.

The video, which has been posted on YouTube, is also being shared on the messaging platform Whatsapp.

‘This land is depending on you’

Meanwhile, Vigneswaran, who is hoping to reclaim MIC’s traditional seat of Sungai Siput in Perak, has an audio clip.

The clip is accompanied by an image featuring the MIC president wearing a BN shirt with the caption, “Restore Sungai Siput P062”.

The song, among others, said: “Tan Sri’s service united us, Tan Sri’s love has bound us. This land is depending on you, show us the right path.”

Both Vigneswaran and Saravanan also deployed hot air balloons as part of their election campaign in the respective constituencies.

MIC is contesting 10 parliamentary and four state seats in this election. In the last general election, Saravanan emerged as the party's sole MP.

The BN component party has been struggling to retain its relevance since the 2008 general election held in the aftermath of the Hindraf movement, which convinced Indian voters to cast their ballots for the opposition.

The 2008 polls also witnessed the defeat of the then MIC president and eight-term incumbent Samy Vellu in Sungai Siput.

In this general election, Vigneswaran is facing seven opponents, including the incumbent S Kesavan from Pakatan Harapan.

Saravanan, on the other hand, is locking horns with Harapan’s K Saraswathy, who is making her election debut, and four others. - Mkini
