PETALING JAYA: Gerakan Tanah Air chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his coalition would not be making any “empty promises” to convince the people to vote for it in the general election.
He said what GTA could offer is to turn Malaysia around so that the country would become an Asian Tiger once again, the Daily Express reported.
“We will show that we have ideas on how to develop the country, how to clean up corruption and all that,” he said at a press conference here.
He was also asked to comment on Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) earlier promising to appoint deputy ministers from Sabah and Sarawak if they win GE15.
“Well, if they are sincere, we support them. But I am afraid it is only a promise made during the election. When they win, they will do a different thing. If that is something that is positive for Sabah, we will support it,”
He added that GTA would implement whatever is necessary for Sabah’s development.
“We want to make promises that we can keep. Some parties want to abolish tolls, but if tolls are abolished, then roads cannot be repaired because the government would need to pay off its debt (to highway concessionaires),” he said.
He was alluding to Pakatan Harapan which had pledged in its manifesto to reduce toll rates on the North-South Expressway in stages with the end goal of abolishing tolls. - FMT
