Umno will not hold an internal election at its annual general assembly in December, its supreme council member Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii confirmed.
Instead, he said the party polls would be held within six months after the conclusion of the general election, as stipulated in Umno’s constitution amendment.
“The general assembly next month is not a party election. As you know, there are two general assemblies this year due to Covid-19.
“We held one the other day for 2021 and next month would be for this year.
“So after the 2022 general assembly, we will hold a party election. We have six months for the election,” Razlan (above) was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
On Wednesday, party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan announced that the party will hold its general assembly from Dec 21 to 24.
Before making an announcement on the party election date, Razlan said the secretary-general would usually hold a political bureau meeting to determine the important dates and then bring the matter to the Umno supreme council meeting.
On July 29, the Registrar of Societies approved Umno’s application to amend its constitution and postpone its party election.
With the approval of the amendment, Umno will be allowed to postpone its party polls for up to six months after a general election, or up to 18 months from the end of its leadership’s term, whichever comes later. - Mkini
