PAS has turned down Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's invitation to join his unity government.
In a statement today, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party made a decision to respect the "mandate of the majority".
"After considering from various angles and obtaining feedback, PAS' position is not to join the federal government that is led by Pakatan Harapan and DAP.
"This is to respect the trust and mandate of the majority, especially the voters who chose PAS and Perikatan Nasional during the 15th general election," he said.
Takiyuddin (above) said PAS will play the role of constructive opposition and ensure that the government is administered well.
It is uncertain what Takiyuddin meant by "mandate of the majority".
PN won 30.1 percent of the popular vote during the Nov 19 elections, which was enough to secure 33.2 percent of the seats in the Dewan Rakyat.
If Sabah Bersatu's seats are removed from Gabungan Rakyat Sabah's (GRS) tally and added to PN, then the latter has 77 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, making them the second largest bloc after Harapan.
Yesterday, Anwar claimed that he has the support of all non-PN MPs, which would, in theory, provide him with the backing from 148 MPs. - Mkini
