PKR’s Ramanan defends asset declaration devoid of details

PKR’s R Ramanan claims the asset declaration need not detail everything he owns, just the categories.

SHAH ALAM: PKR’s Sungai Buloh candidate R Ramanan insists he has given a “proper breakdown” of his assets, amid questions over the lack of details in his asset declaration.

“I’ve already declared what I have, what is there to hide? That is the declaration. There is nothing to hide, I have given a proper breakdown,” he told FMT in an interview.

“You have full access to my declaration online. Even Forbes only lists the net worth of individuals like Bill Gates. They don’t ask how many ships and yachts he has.”

Ramanan, who is in a seven-cornered fight that headlines health minister Khairy Jamaluddin, has come under scrutiny by social media users over his declaration which does not have details of his assets, just their total value.

In comparison, other PKR candidates such as Wong Chen (Subang) and Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai) have listed details of their assets and liabilities, including their vehicles, watches, paintings, allowances, shares and loans among others. The value, quantity and brand of their assets have also been stated.

Asked about the lack of details, Ramanan said he had a lot of assets. “How do I fill out all my assets? I have 13 motorbikes (and several) cars,” he said, adding that he had filled the form with his accountants.

“Not a single voter has asked me what type of car I drive. This would not be the main criteria for voters when it comes to choosing a candidate,” he said.

On why he didn’t emulate other PKR leaders in publishing a detailed asset declaration, Ramanan insisted voters did not need to know the number and type of assets he held.

According to the declaration posted on PKR’s dedicated candidates website, Ramanan has RM63.5 million in net assets less liabilities comprising RM23 million in cash and savings, land and houses (RM27 million), investments (RM3.5 million), jewellery and art (RM4 million), vehicles (RM8.5 million) and debts (RM2.5 million). - FMT
