Support party decision or quit, Nur Jazlan tells BN MPs

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional MPs who support a prime ministerial candidate who is not backed by the coalition should resign, says former Pulai MP Nur Jazlan Mohamed.

The Umno Pulai division chief reminded the newly elected MPs they signed a pledge to give party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi the mandate to determine any political cooperation in the formation of the government before they were confirmed as candidates for the general election.

“I think the BN MPs who oppose Zahid on this matter actually want to be fired on purpose so they can become independent MPs and can support a prime ministerial candidate who is not backed by BN,” he said in a statement.

“I urge these BN MPs to resign if they are sincere in their political struggle and for the sake of Umno and BN’s future.”

Nur Jazlan also called on BN MPs not to play “dirty politics” and “manipulate” BN members and the public by calling for Zahid’s resignation.

Zahid and other members of the BN Supreme Council held a meeting with Pakatan Harapan leaders yesterday to discuss possible cooperation in forming the next government.

There has been opposition to the move by BN MPs such as Jalaluddin Alias (Jelebu) and Hishammuddin Hussein (Sembrong).

In a Facebook post yesterday, BN treasurer-general Hishammuddin said he would not support any cooperation with PH to form the government.

“I am ready to be sacked by the party but I will not change my stand,” said the Sembrong MP.

“Those who feel they can take action and sack me (from the party) for holding to his principle, go ahead.”

Zahid, who is facing pressure from Umno leaders to step down following BN’s poor 30-seat haul in GE15, has reminded BN MPs that he has the final say in any decision on forming alliances to establish the next government.

He has also denied that BN had entered into any agreement to form the government with other coalitions, stating that any statutory declarations signed by BN MPs supporting the formation of a new government were invalid.
