PETALING JAYA: The election for the Tioman state seat has been postponed following the death of a candidate, says the Election Commission.
Perikatan Nasional’s candidate for the seat, Md Yunus Ramli died early this morning.
According to a New Straits Times report, Pahang EC chief Zamree Hamli said the scenario was similar to the contest for the Padang Serai seat which will be held at a later date after Pakatan Harapan’s candidate M Karupaiya passed away.
“The Tioman state seat election will be postponed until the EC decides on a new date,” Zamree was quoted as saying.
“The polls for the Rompin parliament and the other two state seats namely Muadzam Shah and Bukit Ibam will go on as scheduled,” he said.
Yunus, 61, died at 3.30am at the Kuala Rompin Hospital in Pahang.
According to Sinar Harian, the 61-year-old died due to heart complications.
There was supposed to be a five-cornered fight for the seat, with Johari contesting with Yunus, Pakatan Harapan’s Fadzli Ramly, Pejuang’s Osman Bakar and independent candidate Sulaiman Bakar.
Yesterday, EC set Dec 7 for polling for the Padang Serai seat in Kedah, following Karupaiya’s death on Wednesday. - FMT
