KUALA SELANGOR: The Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for Tanjong Karang, Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi is feeling optimistic about his chances in the general election (GE15) after Barisan Nasional (BN) dropped six-term MP Noh Omar.

Zulkafperi, 63, said he did not expect the Selangor BN chief to be out of the running.

“We did not expect this at all,” the Bersatu man said.

“At first, I thought I had a 50-50 chance of winning. But since Noh is not contesting, I believe I now have the advantage.”

In the 2018 general election (GE14), Noh won the seat with a majority of only 1,970 votes, defeating Zulkafperi, who stood as a Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, and PAS’ Nor Az Azlan Ahmad in the process.

With PAS and Bersatu now allies in PN, Zulkafperi said he had a good chance of winning the seat.

“The Tanjong Karang PAS chief has been helpful in introducing me to PAS supporters,” he said while lauding the Islamic party’s commitment towards his campaign.

He claimed that the cracks within the local Umno division over the dropping of Noh would also contribute to his victory.

After Noh was dropped, Rosni Mastol, a Tanjong Karang Umno committee member announced he would contest as an independent.

“The split within Umno will benefit PN,” said Zulkafperi.

The fight for Tanjong Karang will see Zulkafperi take on Rosni, Siti Rahayu Baharin of Muda, who is representing PH, Azlan Sani Zawawi (Pejuang) and Habibah Yusof (BN). - FMT
