PETALING JAYA: A coalition of 14 women’s rights organisations has called on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to fulfill Pakatan Harapan’s election promise of granting citizenship to children born overseas to Malaysian mothers.
The Joint Action Group for Gender Equality also wants Anwar, who is PH chairman, to gazette the Anti-Sexual Harassment Law passed in July, as promised.
“The new government must comply with international obligations to gender equality and non-discrimination and usher in an era of protection and empowerment for all women and children in Malaysia,” the group said.
Anwar was also urged to appoint a credible and capable person to be the minister for women, family and community development. The candidate must have a strong track record of championing the welfare of women and children, the group said.
Among the organisations which signed the statement were the Women’s Aid Organisation, Sisters in Islam and the Association of Women Lawyers. - FMT
