PETALING JAYA: The road transport department (JPJ) has detected a widespread scam which issues fake driving licences, known as “flying licences” (or “lesen terbang”), via social media.
Its deputy director-general (management), M Janagarajan, said the department had identified many victims of this scam.
He said action was being taken through JPJ’s driving licensing integrity department, with the cooperation of other enforcement agencies.
“These scammers advertise on social media claiming they are offering valid licences. In fact, these are fake documents.
“Some victims have been issued these fake licences after they make payments. Others find the scammers’ accounts closed once payment is made,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Janagarajan spoke to reporters after closing a team development course for drivers of Express Bus Konsortium E-Mutiara Bhd at the Jalan Wilayah Timur Transport Academy in Kota Bharu today.
He appealed to drivers to exercise more caution when obtaining driving licences and not become victims of this scam.
“This is not a ‘lesen terbang’ issue. These licences are forgeries and the details of drivers are not in the JPJ system.
“If anyone obtains a licence through such means, he or she will be using a vehicle without a valid licence. They will be exposed when trying to renew these ‘licences’.”
He said JPJ is cooperating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and the police to act against the scammers. - FMT
