Kelantan police have discovered 97 individuals from Myanmar, believed to have been smuggled into Malaysia, hidden among undergrowth by paddy fields at Kampung Sapi, Pasir Mas.
State police chief Muhamad Zaki Harun said checks found that none of the individuals possessed valid documentation to enter the country.
"Police also nabbed one male from Thailand over suspicion of involvement in human trafficking activities.
"A mobile phone was seized along with RM3,000 cash in mixed currencies, suspected to be income from human trafficking," said Zaki in a statement.
Zaki said the discovery followed a surveillance exercise conducted on the area at around midnight on Friday by the local police, assisted by a team of personnel from the General Operations Force and Strike Force.
He said the surveillance team spotted a man dressed in black walking towards the bushes in a suspicious manner, while carrying food packets handed over to a waiting group.
The man is currently being detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) 2012, while the 97 individuals are held in custody under immigration laws.
All the individuals aged between 16 and 58 were taken to the Jeram Perdah police station for further action.
