Mat Sabu: New Amanah Youth chief must be diligent, committed

The new Amanah Youth chief, to be elected in, must be someone diligent and committed, said Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Mohamad said the new youth chief has to possess leadership characteristics as shown by former PAS president Fadzil Noor, former PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“They are all very hard working. Anwar was hard working as the Abim (Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia) president and in various other roles. As for Nik Aziz, he would give sermons even when he was sick.

“How we present ourselves is very important in politics,” he pointed out.

Mohamad said Anwar was someone who would attend seven to eight programmes a day when he was out campaigning while other campaigners might only do one.

“During the Kemaman campaign, it might take some activists three and a half hours to get there, only to speak for 30 minutes and leave.

“If you don't have a strong spirit, you cannot (lead),” he added.

Mohamad disagreed that his party's grassroots is less committed now that the party is in power.

“To me, things are the same. During the Pulai and Simpang Renggam by-elections, I participated the same way as I did when I was not a minister,” he said.

The Amanah Youth elections will take place on Dec 16. The incumbent leader Mohd Hasbie Muda is expected to face two challengers - his deputy Razak Ridzuan and Batu Tiga assemblyperson Danial Al Rashid Haron Aminar Rashid.

Mohamad said the incoming Amanah Youth chief must adopt a multi-racial approach to politics.

“I admit that PAS is at its strongest now, but it is difficult for them to (win over non-Muslims) unless they change. Malaysia will remain multi-racial because of Sabah and Sarawak.

“This is very important and youths who want to be involved in politics must take note of this,” he advised.

PAS and Perikatan Nasional's scare tactics, said Mohamad, had likely reached its end and were not a viable long-term strategy.

“I believe that the perception of Bersatu and PAS were trying to create - that Islam is threatened, that the Malays (are suffering) or that the DAP are communist - has peaked.

“They peaked in 2022. They used TikTok and the like, but it is unsustainable,” said Mohamad.
