PETALING JAYA: Starting from January next year, members of the Melaka assembly will receive a salary increase following the passing of a bill to modify the remuneration enactment for elected representatives and administration members.

Melaka chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh said the remuneration of the state’s assemblymen had not been reviewed since 2015, adding that 10 other states had done so.

He said this when presenting the motion at the Melaka state legislative assembly sitting at Seri Negeri, Melaka.

He also said the amendments to the enactment raised the fixed allowance for members of the assembly from RM9,000 to RM12,000. Speakers appointed from among assemblymen will also see a salary increase from RM7,000 to RM11,000. Speakers appointed from non-assembly members would receive a raise from RM8,000 to RM11,000.

Ab Rauf added that speakers would also receive an increment of RM3,000 in allowance.

Under the amendment, the chief minister will also receive an increase in remuneration from RM15,000 to RM18,000. Meanwhile, state executive councillors would receive a RM1,000 raise to their RM7,000 remuneration.

The state secretary, legal adviser and financial officer positions are also entitled to a hike from RM8,250 to RM9,250.

“I am also pleased to announce that this salary hike will also be extended to the 123 retired state assemblymen, whether they are receiving pensions or supplementary pensions,” he said, adding that their pension adjustments would be based on the estimated years of service.

Ab Rauf said the increase in pensions for retired assemblymen would involve an additional annual allocation of RM3,470,333.28.

The bill was passed with the support of 26 assemblymen and two opposition representatives, while two assemblymen were absent. - FMT
