Melaka election postal voting applications open

 

Applications for domestic and overseas postal voting for the 16th Melaka election are now open, with eligible voters required to apply online through the MySPR portal. NSTP/FILE PIC

KUALA LUMPUR: Applications for all categories of domestic and overseas postal voting for the 16th Melaka election opened today.

Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus said all applications must be submitted online via the MySPR portal, with the closing date to be announced later.

"Eligible voters who intend to cast their ballots by post must register for or have an existing MySPR account before submitting their application," he said in a statement today.

Khairul Shahril said Category 1A applications covered police and military personnel, election officials, EC members and staff, as well as media personnel.

Applications are also open under Category 1B for Malaysians residing abroad and Category 1C for agencies or organisations.

Yesterday, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the dissolution of the Melaka Legislative Assembly, effective today, paving the way for the 16th Melaka election following the consent of Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam.

Melaka Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Ibrahim Durum also submitted the dissolution notice to the EC yesterday.

In the 2021 Melaka election, Barisan Nasional (BN) won 21 of the 28 seats to form the state government with a more than two-thirds majority, while Pakatan Harapan secured five seats and Perikatan Nasional two. - NST
